If Smiles were a permanent companion I would gladly kick Jed/Faythe from my party to make room for her, the same way I kicked Ardomir for Ismail or Marcus for Ingvar.Īll of these companions also seem to have some restrictions attached: Jed is just a pain in the ass, I would gladly harvest him for his implant, and I likely will once this feature is implemented, unless his quest is really, really cool.Ĭompanions don't have to be overpowered to be stronger, they'd just need good stat distributions and equipment. Faythe is pretty decent, but her attribute distribution could be better. Evans is great at his combat role, but if I ever wanted something else, I could trade him off. I'm guessing Colony Ship will feel similar in terms of power level. I think Dungeon Rats had great companion progression. It is also dangerous to introduce companions late into the game, because the player has less time to learn more about them and to care about them. I hope that new companions are not more powerful, because this would invalidate your investment in a 'lower tier' companion and everyone should use basically the same rules. The player could just reload if a companion dies or select another approach if a companion would leave the party (which is currently possible with Faythe). There are always trade-offs of course, perhaps she forces participation in actions you disagree with before joining for example, or a particularly mercenary companion costs $5k that could otherwise go to better equipment.Īlso one is a robot and robots are cool, pretty sure Romeo is going to join my party no matter the cost. New companions may be more powerful or interesting even if they are not as custom built, there's nothing that prevents Harbinger from having higher stats, skills, and feats than your starter companions may have by then, think the Demon from Dungeon Rats. Old companions can die or leave you (killing Morgan for Faythe and killing Knurl for Jed). This makes sense from a lore perspective in my opinion, but why should a player replace a companion from a gameplay perspective? I think that this question is especially important, because the player has less options to customize higher level companions, because their feats are predetermined.
